This activity may well have been the decisive factor in establishing Delphi almost immediately as an authoritative oracle, and Homer's Iliad, most commonly dated to the eighth century bce, already mentions the wealth of its votive offerings. It was a time of extensive Greek colonization, and one in which the oracle, for obscure reasons, managed to play an important role. Archaeological excavations at Delphi have shown that the temple of Apollo, which was the center of the oracular activities, was not built before 750 bce. The Delphic oracle was the most important oracle of ancient Greece.
